Are ghosts real?
It is the oldest question out there. Skeptics laugh it off, and believers swear by it. But when you spend every night walking the oldest streets of the Gaslamp Quarter and Old Town, the debate starts to fade. You just get used to the shadows. You learn to ignore the sudden cold spots or the heavy feeling of being watched from a second-story window.
The camera, however, does not care what you believe.
Our guides know exactly where the darkest energy sits in these historic buildings. But the most compelling evidence rarely comes from us. It comes from the people walking right beside us. Every single week, our guests point their phones into the dark corners of 19th-century pioneer homes and capture things that simply defy logic.
We are talking about unexplainable anomalies, strange mists, and impossible reflections caught in antique mirrors. This is real, tangible proof captured by everyday people who just happened to snap a photo at the exact right second.
We decided it was time to open up the Haunted San Diego archives. Below, we are sharing unedited photos submitted directly to our inbox by our guests, broken down by haunted location, along with the chilling stories they sent us about the exact moment they pressed the shutter.
Take a look. You decide.
The Frontier Hospital: The Davis-Horton House
A genuine Spooky Season evening requires the right fuel, but setting the mood starts long before the sun goes down. Skip the brightly lit national chains and support the local businesses that keep San Diego’s culture completely unique. Whether you need a pre-tour caffeine boost or a late-night bite, here are our top local picks to pair with your evening.

Take a close look at the top right corner of the photo. Just below the ceiling line, the shadows seem to pull together into the distinct shape of a face surrounded by flowing hair.
But what makes this guest’s experience so compelling is not just the visual anomaly. It is the physical and environmental reaction that came with it. Experienced paranormal investigators know that sudden, unexplained physical symptoms, like intense nausea or severe acid reflux flaring up out of nowhere, are classic signs of a heavy spiritual presence.
When you combine that sudden physical reaction with her son watching the EMF meter completely spike near the old kitchen sink, it becomes clear that this family walked right into an active energy field.

When you look at the photo, the first thing you notice is the bright, solid blue streak of light cutting directly across the antique parlor table. In paranormal investigations, light anomalies are actually fairly common, but they almost always show up as translucent white orbs or faint gray mists. Catching a solid blue streak of light like this is incredibly rare.
Many investigators believe that blue anomalies represent high-frequency energy or a very deliberate, localized manifestation. Given that the Davis-Horton House once served as a frontier hospital, the parlor would have been a central place for both waiting families and unimaginable grief. The atmosphere in that specific room is notoriously heavy, which explains why this group felt an immediate physical reaction before the photo was even taken.
Our guide Archie is known for his incredible historical storytelling. It is a well documented fact in the paranormal community that spirits will often react to their own history being spoken out loud. Based on this bright blue streak of energy, it looks like someone in the parlor was listening closely to Archie that night.

Mirrors have long been considered spiritual portals in the paranormal community. When Mark and his family hopped off our Coffin on Wheels bus tour with their guide Rosalinda, they walked right into one of the most active rooms in the Gaslamp Quarter. Mark had the right instinct. He took a photo of the antique mirror simply to see what the camera might capture.
The result is chilling. While the room looked completely normal to the naked eye, the digital lens picked up a heavy, unexplainable reflection staring back at them.
To answer Mark’s question directly: yes. This specific mirror in the Davis-Horton House is a massive hotspot. We receive photos of strange anomalies, distorted reflections, and shadow figures caught in this exact glass on a regular basis. It serves as a perfect reminder to always take photos of the antique mirrors when you walk through these pioneer homes with us. You never know who might be standing right behind you.
The Relocated Spirits: Heritage Park
Just up the hill from the famous Whaley House sits Heritage Park. It is not your average haunted location. It is an entire neighborhood of historic Victorian mansions saved from demolition and relocated to one quiet park.
This raises a massive question in the paranormal community. If you move a historic house across town, does the energy move with it?
Based on the evidence we see every week on our Old Town walking tour, the answer is an absolute yes. When the sun goes down and our guests explore the grounds near the Senlis Cottage, the atmosphere gets incredibly heavy. And when they point their cameras at the dark, empty windows, they frequently capture the impossible.
Let’s look at what our guests caught.

Sometimes we receive photos in our inbox with no explanation at all. A guest will get home, scroll through their camera roll, spot something impossible, and simply forward it to us without a word. That is exactly what happened with this incredible shot taken outside the McConaughy House.
While exploring the dark, quiet grounds of Heritage Park on our Old Town walking tour, a guest snapped this exterior photo of the relocated Victorian mansion. To the naked eye, it was just a beautiful, empty historic home. But the camera captured a bright, distinct orb floating right near the structure.
In the paranormal community, orbs are always a massive topic of debate. Skeptics will immediately write them off as dust, pollen, or a camera flash reflecting off a passing bug. But experienced investigators know exactly how to tell the difference. Dust particles look faint, gray, and translucent. The anomalies caught in this photo are solid, brightly illuminated, and seem to have their own internal energy source.
When you remember that this entire neighborhood of historic homes was completely uprooted and moved, it makes perfect sense that the residual energy is unsettled. The spirits tied to the McConaughy House might just be wandering the dark grounds of their new front yard.

This image and email from Officer JJ are a textbook example of a genuine paranormal encounter, complete with physical evidence and unexplainable technological interference.
When JJ lagged behind the rest of the group to snap a quick photo on his phone’s night mode, he captured something entirely out of place. In the image, you can clearly see what looks like shadowy, ghostly figures standing near a small, brightly illuminated tree. But the most important part of this story is the immediate debunking process. JJ and our guide Alice immediately looked back down the hill.
Even more chilling is what happened to the digital files themselves after JJ left Heritage Park. Any seasoned paranormal investigator will tell you that spirits often pull energy from electronics in order to manifest. Batteries suddenly drain, flashlights flicker, and digital files get corrupted. For JJ’s original, crystal clear night mode photo to mysteriously alter and vanish from his phone the very next day is a massive red flag for paranormal interference. The energy at Heritage Park literally manipulated his camera roll.

The best paranormal evidence often comes from healthy skeptics. Melissa knows all about camera glitches, dust, and pareidolia, which is when the brain tricks you into seeing faces in random patterns. But what makes her Halloween night capture at the Sherman-Gilbert House so incredible is the historical validation behind it.
When Melissa wandered off to snap a few photos before Leandra officially started the Old Town tour, she had absolutely no idea about the specific lore attached to that building. The widow’s walk at the very top of the house has a long, documented history of sightings.
Melissa captured a figure leaning over the railing in the exact spot where a known spirit is said to reside, completely by accident and without knowing the ghost story beforehand. When photographic evidence perfectly lines up with decades of historical eyewitness accounts, it makes even the biggest skeptics take a second look.
The Watching Windows: The Horton Grand Hotel
Just a few steps away from the Davis-Horton House sits one of the most notoriously haunted buildings in the entire country, the Horton Grand Hotel. This massive Victorian masterpiece was actually reconstructed piece by piece in the Gaslamp Quarter, and it seems the resident spirits came right along with the original bricks.
The paranormal activity here is so well documented that hotel guests regularly request the most haunted rooms. But as our next guest discovered, you do not even have to step inside the lobby to catch something impossible. Sometimes, the hotel is watching you from the street.

Sometimes a photo speaks completely for itself. We received this next image from a guest without a single word of explanation attached. They simply uploaded the file and hit send. But once you look closely at the glass panel, you understand exactly why they wanted us to see it.
This was taken from the sidewalk just outside the Horton Grand Hotel. The guest was snapping a picture of the historic exterior. But standing on the other side of the glass, completely shrouded in shadow, is the distinct silhouette of a man.
If you look closely at the shape of his head, that is not a modern baseball cap or a beanie. That is a tall, structured Victorian top hat.
The Gaslamp Quarter in the late 1800s was the stomping ground for gamblers, merchants, and wealthy businessmen. The Horton Grand is essentially a time capsule for that exact era. While many people know about the famous ghosts haunting the upper floors, the ground floor is heavily trafficked by residual energy from the 19th century.
Catching a full shadow figure is rare enough. Catching one wearing period accurate clothing while staring out into the modern street is the kind of evidence that paranormal investigators dream of.

The space between haunted locations can be just as active as the buildings themselves. After finishing up at the Davis-Horton House, this couple was simply walking across the street with our guide, Josephine. The guest turned around to snap a quick photo of the Horton Grand Hotel towering over them in the dark.
When you look at the zoomed-in, brightened versions of the file, the shape is undeniable. There is a distinct silhouette of a woman standing right at the glass, peering directly down at the street below.
But here is where this photo gets truly chilling. The Horton Grand Hotel was built on the exact spot where a famous madam named Ida Bailey ran her 19th-century brothel, the Canary Cottage. Ida is one of the most well documented spirits in the Gaslamp Quarter, and people constantly report seeing a woman in period clothing lingering in the halls.
Take a close look at the figure in the hotel window. Now look at Ida.
We will let you decide who was watching our tour group walk by that night.
From the Archives: The Unexplained Orbs
We could not close the Haunted San Diego archives without sharing two more incredible catches. Sometimes guests send us photos without a single word of explanation. They just drop the image in our inbox and let the evidence speak for itself.
Here are two of the most undeniable orb photos we have received from two completely different haunted landmarks.
The Spiritualist's Mansion: Villa Montezuma

Villa Montezuma is not just a beautiful Victorian mansion. It was built in the 1880s for Jesse Shepard, a famous author, musician, and spiritualist who regularly hosted séances right in his living room. The architecture itself was practically designed to channel and hold onto spiritual energy.
This guest photo perfectly captures what happens when that energy remains active. The bright, floating anomaly you see here is a classic spiritual orb. While dust and bugs usually look transparent and misshapen on camera, true paranormal orbs are perfectly round, solid, and seem to generate their own internal light. Catching this kind of glowing energy at a house built specifically for speaking to the dead makes perfect sense.
The Paved Over Graveyard: El Campo Santo

El Campo Santo in Old Town is one of the oldest cemeteries in California. But what makes this graveyard so notoriously active is the history of its grounds. In the early 1900s, a modern street and sidewalk were literally paved right over several of the original graves. If you walk down San Diego Avenue today, you can actually see the brass markers embedded in the asphalt where the bodies still rest.
When you disturb a final resting place, the energy becomes incredibly restless. This guest photo shows a cluster of thick, bright orbs hovering directly over the historic grounds in the dark. It is a striking visual reminder that just because a city builds a street over a graveyard, it does not mean the residents ever left.
